Ulupo Heiau
Kailua, Oahu

Ulupo Heiau, is believed to have been built around 500 CE by dwarfs who lived deep in the Hawaiian forests and hidden valleys called the Menehune. Originally it was built as a sacred agricultural temple for villagers to bring offerings to bless crops of taro, banana, sweet potato, and sugar cane. Later, it was dedicated to success in war, where human and animal sacrifices were offered. Facing the North Star to guide early Polynesian canoe voyages, Ulupo in the Hawaiian language means “Night Inspiration.”
