Stockholm 018

Price range: $50.00 through $80.00

The Vasa, a Swedish warship made from 1,000 oak trees, sank on the maiden voyage on Aug. 10, 1628.

The ship was preserved in the Baltic Sea, where dark water and a mix of fresh and salt water lacking oxygen preserved the ship.

Excavated in 1961, the ship is decorated with sculptures based on the Renaissance idealization of Roman and Greek antiquity. Many of the figures are in Dutch grotesque style, depicting fantastic and frightening creatures, including mermaids, wild men, sea monsters and tritons.
