For centuries the Roman Forum was the center of Roman public life. It was a marketplace, the business district, and civic center. It included temples, statues, monuments, a senate house and courts. It has been called the most celebrated meeting place in all history. When the Roman Empire fell, the Forum became forgotten. Today columns and stone blocks remain of where temples once stood, materials removed to build nearby palaces and churches.
